Hope and excitement,
step one and step two;
the thrilling beginning
of something you rue.
Hold out your hope,
and assume a good ending,
then find yourself wasting
your lifetime pretending.
Hope and excitement,
the brazen foundation;
the lead-up to failure
and damned ruination.
When I see the hopeful,
I feel only concern:
Their hope will be ashes,
their excitement an urn.
If never you’re hopeful
and do not expect,
life will not disappoint,
pain will have no effect.
The prerequisite feelings
for loss to be lasting
are hope and excitement;
for failure’s contrasting.
